On this page, you will find a free crochet dragon pattern.

In 2020 I first came up with the dragon idea. Look at the sketches! I decided not to wait for the year of the dragon, according to the Chinese horoscope, and made a pattern immediately!

Terms and stitches.

The pattern is written in English, using US terminology.

ch - chain
sc - single crochet
inc - increase
dec - decrease

Let’s start with a head and a body.

Crochet with red yarn.
They are crocheted as one detail. Start at the top of the head.

RND 1: Ch 3 /pic.1/, 1 sc in second ch from a hook /pic.2-4/, 3 sc in next st /pic.4-5/, continue on the other side of foundation chains, 2 sc in next st /pic.6/ [6] /pic.7-8/

RND 2: 1 inc /pic.9/, 1 sc, 2 inc, 1 sc, 1 inc [10] /pic.10/

RND 3: (1 inc, 4 sc) * repeat 2 times [12] /pic.11/

RND 4: (1 sc, 1 inc) * 6 times [18] /pic.12/

RND 5: (2 sc, 1 inc) * 6 times [24]

RND 7: (4 sc, 1 inc) * 6 times [36]

If you use the safety eyes put them now between the rounds 14 and 15. Place the right eye between stitches 35 and 36 of the 14th round, and the left eye between stitches 40 and 41 of the 14th round. /pic.18-19/

Start to stuff the head. /pic.20/

Stuff the head to the end. /pic.21-22/

RND 5: (1 dec, 6 sc) * 2 times [14]

RND 8: 12 sc [12]

RND 10: 10 sc [10]

RND 11: (1 dec, 3 sc) * 2 times [8]

Stuff the body and start to stuff the first leg. /pic.30/

RND 12: 4 inc, 4 sc [12]

RND 13: 8 sc, 2 dec [10]

RND 14: 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 dec, 2 sc [8]

Stuff the leg to the end. /pic.31/

RND 15: 4 dec [4]

Fasten off, leaving a long tail approx. 6 inches (15 cm). /pic.32/

With a yarn needle, insert the tail of the yarn through the front loops of all stitches of the last round. Pull all together at once. /pic.33/

Insert the needle into the leg and pull it out as shown in pic.34. Pull tightly. Fasten off, weave in the yarn end. /pic.34-39/

Second leg.

Start crochet in the first skipped stitch in RND 1 of the first leg. /pic.40-41/

RND 2: start in the first stitch of the previous round /pic.43/, 18 sc [18]

RND 3: (1 dec,7 sc) * 2 times [16]

RND 4: 16 sc [16]

RND 5: (1 dec, 6 sc) * 2 times [14]

RND 6: 14 sc [14]

RND 7: (1 dec, 5 sc) * 2 times [12]

RND 8: 12 sc [12]

RND 9: (1 dec, 4 sc) * 2 times [10]

RND 10: 10 sc [10]

Stuff the leg. /pic.44/

RND 11: (1 dec, 3 sc) * 2 times [8]

RND 12: 4 sc, 4 inc [12]

RND 14: 2 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 dec [8]

Stuff the leg to the end.

RND 15: 4 dec [4]

Fasten off, leaving a long tail approx. 6 inches (15 cm).

With a yarn needle, insert the tail of the yarn through the front loops of all stitches of the last round. Pull all together at once.
Insert the needle into the leg and pull it out as shown in pic.34. Pull tightly. Fasten off, weave in the yarn end. /pic.45/

Sew up the hole between legs. /pic.46-47/

Crochet with yellow yarn.

RND 2: 1 inc /pic.51/, 7 sc, 1 inc, stop to crochet, it will be the end of this round [20] /pic.52/

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Change yarn to the red.

Don’t stuff.

Embroider the stripes on the yellow part with the black yarn and needle. /pic.70/

Assembly.

1. Embroider the stripes on the legs with the black yarn and needle as shown in pic 71.

2. Sew up the belly patch between rounds 31 and 38 of the body. /pic.72-76/

3. Sew up the tail between rounds 34 and 36 of the body. /pic.77-78/

4. Sew up the arms between rounds 25 and 27 of the body. /pic.79-80/

5. Sew up two small horns on rounds 8-9 with 3 stitches between them. Then sew up the other two small horns on rounds 4-5 with 3 stitches between horns. /pic.81-84/

6. Sew up the bigger horns as shown in pic.85-89.

7. Sew up the accessories on the head as shown in pic.90-92.

8. Sew up the nose patch.

Embroider the nose with black yarn and a needle. Use for it a french knot technique.

Insert the thread of the black yarn through the nose patch, leaving tails from both sides around 2-3 inches (5-6 cm). /pic.93-105/

9. Embroider the stripes with the black yarn and needle on the bigger yellow horns. /pic.106-108/
